Water type: River
Launch area is: Beach
Launch area surface is: Sand
Facilities: Restroom, Trash
Launching considerations / restrictions:
Strong tidal currents. Commercial ship traffic in channel (tankers, freighters, tug-and-barge rigs, etc.). Ferry plying back and forth between Fort Mott, Fort Delaware, and Delaware City. Keep clear of all.
Parking situation:
No fees. Hard surfaced parking area, with access path over lawn to beach launch area. Best to use cart to transport kayaks to water, so as not to wear out good will of park authorities.
Comments:
This is an irreplaceable, prime launch site. Kayaking groups should be kept small and unobtrusive in order to maintain access to this location. Kayakers paddle from Fort Mott at the pleasure of the superintendent, and need to be model users of the facility. The park itself is a gem, and well worth a visit in itself, along with neighboring Fort Delaware and Finn's Point National Cemetery.
! Important note: Landing kayaks on Pea Patch Island, upon which Fort Delaware is located, is strictly forbidden. Take the ferry as a foot passenger to visit the island and fort.
